Buckle up ladies and gentlemen, you're in for some electrifying San Francisco racing!

San Francisco is one of the two cities featured in Midtown Madness 2, alongside London. It is the only city to be featured in the demo/trial version of the same game. The city is modeled after San Francisco, California, United States.

Overview[]

San Francisco is the second largest city in the US state of California. It was founded in 1776 and has grown to have its own county and house four million people.

The San Francisco city depicted in Midtown Madness 2 is a simplified version of the area between the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. There are multiple boroughs in this area, but key locations are Embarcadero, Presidio, Fisherman's Wharf, Civic Center, Financial District, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, Fort Mason, and Pacific Heights. Alcatraz Island is visible from across the bay, but it is not accessible without the use of fan-made mods.

Trivia[]

  • Oddly, in the game files of earlier beta versions of Midnight Club: Street Racing instead of Midtown Madness 2, there is a leftover texture in the first Midtown Madness installment's UI style that mentions San Francisco. It was likely planned originally as an add-on for the original Midtown Madness, but became a default location of the sequel instead.[1]
  • Midtown Madness 2's layout of San Francisco has the following differences compared to its real-life counterpart:
    • The docks up north near Fisherman's Wharf are supposed to resemble Pier 45 and Hyde Street Pier, but are not included in the map since the designs in-game do not resemble their real-life counterparts.
    • Most neighborhoods of West of Van Ness Avenue (Pacific Heights, Japantown, Fillmore, or Cow Hollow) were removed for gameplay purposes, and to fit to the video game formats.
    • Similarly, Land's End is absent from Midtown Madness 2. Instead, the shoreline goes from Golden Gate Park straight to the Presidio.
    • Union Square lacks the iconic Dewey Monument.
    • In the Civic Center, buildings reminiscent of the Herbst Theatre, the War Memorial Opera House, and the California Public Utilities Commission headquarters seem to be present, but are considerably different than their real-world counterparts.
    • The lines of San Francisco's Heritage Streetcar are missing.
    • The well-known Sentinel Building on Columbus Avenue is missing as well.

  • The game's files included a map of a much more realistic layout of San Francisco, but it ended up being removed possibly to eliminate lots of complications.
